"Blood and Bones (Friday the 13th Edition)" is a resurrection of one of the earliest Gloom Theory tales. A darkly playful story about loneliness, letters, and finding companionship in all the wrong places, the song masks its violence with candy-bright melodies and cheerful momentum.
Re-recorded and remade from the ground up in 2025, this Friday the 13th Edition features new vocals and a rebuilt instrumental. What once sounded mischievous now feels deliberate. The same story, told with steadier hands, better tools, and a clearer understanding of who to write to.
(Verse - Blake)
I had a lot of friends
'til I drove them 'round the bend
And then they left me all alone
and so I roam around the globe
In search of new shiny buddies,
to share with them my worries
And my joys and my toys
and my secret jars of poison
I searched up high,
I searched down low
But no matter where I look,
no friends began to show
And so I made a list of killers,
and wrote them all letters
Asking lots of friendly questions,
with all the best intent they told me
(Chorus)
Don't ask your questions to the wall
They keep their secrets locked inside
If blood and bones are what you want
I suggest that you look behind you
(Verse - Gloom)
I keep each letter
in a box under my bed
It really rocks 'cause when I'm sad
I just read all of them again
I sent them drawings done in crayon,
and plans for domination
Even cute little collages
of their exploits from the papers
And when they get out,
we will be friends
Bestest buddies until the end
We'll go on picnics,
with long pork sammies
But I keep thinking 'bout what,
what they told me
(Chorus)
Don't ask your questions to the wall
They keep their secrets locked inside
If blood and bones are what you want
I suggest that you look behind you
Don't ask your questions to the wall
They keep their secrets locked inside
If blood and bones are what you want
I suggest that you look behind you
Origin Stories
We sit down with Blake and Gloom and get the details on how the remake came to be
- Wow, so 2009, that's an old song.
- Yeah, Really old. Ancient Fossil song. We were young. Yeah. I think it started as this silly little upbeat thing - Upbeat yet morbid, that does not sound like us. We made it a very happy for a song about killing? Yes, yes we did. Was it the first song we did? I think so. This, or Mania, but I think this was maybe the first one we finished. I remember we had a lot of fun making it. It went on YouTube.
- And the duet aspect?
- I think we just wanted to do a duet, We'd always kind of alternated songs, but we wanted to do one together. Yeah, I remember we were trying to figure out how to make it a duet, and we just took a verse each. Two people agreeing makes it feel creepier, Exactly, like they're both in on the same secret, and they both know... what's going on.
- I think a question a lot of people ask - What is the wall?
- Well.. The wall is a metaphor for the people who know things but won't tell you. It's the idea that there are people out there who have all the answers, but they won't share them with you. Stop asking safe, silent things for connections. They will never answer. They will never be friends! I... I thought it was just a wall. Like, a literal wall. I was sitting here like "It's a wall, what else could it be?" You... you are a wall person.
- Coming back to it for the Friday the 13th Edition, how did that feel? Were you worried about changing this classic too much?
- It was fun. It's an ooold song and it showed its age Yeah, it was really fun to go back and re-record it properly, not just bedroom producer ninja style, and to add the guitar. The guitar skills are coming in handy. This was the first Gloom Theory song to feature a guitar solo at the end You shredded. Like beef. Like sausages. But yeah, we wanted to clean it up, but also keep the fun, playful vibe of the original. I think we did a good job of that. It still has the same energy. Hannibal energy.
- And just to clarify, you still-
- Yes I still like chips. Mmm chips.
